As a wine connoisseur will know doubt tell you; wine tastes better when it been decanted from the bottle.  But, do you know why we this is?

One reason is that it allows the wine to aerate or 'breathe', which can result in a very young wine taking on the complex flavours and tastes only usually found in a more mature decanter.  The wide base of the wine carafe allows more oxygen to be in contact with the liquid compared to the neck of a normal wine bottle, the result of the oxygen contact will soften the tannins and therefore taste of the wine and encourage the aroma of the wine to come through.  Very clever.

For an older older bottle of wine the decanting serves another purpose; it filters out any impurities that may settled in the bottle over the years of storage.  When pouring a bottle of wine like this, ensure that when you're decanting into the carafe that you're always looking for impurities as your pour the wine.  You may end up with a little wine left in the bottom of the bottom and not  in the carafe, but you will have clearer wine actually in the carafe.
